Festival Overview

The Highway 61 Film Festival is a multiple-day celebration of the magic of movies that was established in 2011 as a means of supporting and promoting independent films and filmmakers from all along Highway 61 and beyond. Taking place annually in October, the Festival is held in Pine City, Minnesota, an area known for its emerging arts and culture scene.


Cash awards will be given to the top feature film ($100) and short film ($50) in each of the following five categories: Drama, Comedy, Documentary, Animation and Action/Horror. A $50 cash prize will be given to the top film in the Student Short category for students grades K-12. The Student Short category is free to enter, but is limited to .

As many great films as time allows will be selected for screening at the festival.


Open to the public

Beginning April 1, 2015, any filmmaker can send in their short or feature film to be considered by festival judges. Early deadline is June 15, 2015. Late deadline is July 1, 2015.

Films many be submitted through FestivalFocus, FilmFreeway, through digital services such as Vimeo and WeTransfer, and by mailing DVDs directly to our address. Please contact us at highway61filmfestival.org if you wish to send us a digital file by Dropbox etc, or if you have any other questions about submissions.

Entry fees are $5 per short film, $10 per feature film by the June 15 regular deadline, and $10 per short and $20 per feature by the July 1 late deadline. There are five paid categories: Drama, Comedy, Documentary, Animation and Action/Horror. Student Short entries (grades K-12) are FREE – but filmmakers MUST be age 18 or younger to enter!
