2014, In progress
Fri 25th Apr to Sat 3rd May
Visions du Reel is the only 'cinema du reel' festival in Switzerland, and one of the most important in the world. It draws a large audience of film-lovers and cinema professionals, and is one of the rare international festivals in Switzerland to present a majority of documentary films in world or international premier screenings.
The Festival Visions du Reel also constitutes a venue for one of the most important European documentary film markets: the Doc Outlook-International Market (DOCM).
In 2014, from April 25 to May 3, we will celebrate a double anniversary: the 20th edition of Visions du Réel and the 45th year of existence of "Nyon International Documentary Film Festival".
Founded in 1969, the event was renamed Visions du Reel in 1995. It is currently presided by former Swiss State Councillor Claude Ruey and is under the artistic directorship of Luciano Barisone.
About 3500 films are carefully watched by the selection committee, and up to 160 films are chosen for the programme. Feature, medium-length and short films are screened in the International Competition. Other sections are Premiers Pas (short films from cinema schools), Etat d'Esprit (new talented film directors) and Helvetiques (Swiss films). The Focus presents a panoramic view on the contemporary film production of a country, thus highlighting its social, cultural and human contexts. The Ateliers, tributes to acknowledged filmmakers, provide the opportunity to attend live film master classes. Through its Forum, the Festival is willing to encourage discussions between the public and cinema professionals.
