Festival Overview

The Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF)... international, independent and eye-opening. Established in 1986, our 10-day festival is committed to showcasing contemporary, independent films that will enlighten and entertain our audiences. We look for films that make us better people -- films with soul. Each year, EIFF presents a cinematic smorgasbord of more than 150 features, documentaries and shorts to a sophisticated, appreciative audience. Inspiring and sometimes, life-changing, EIFF hosts a variety of guests that include directors, producers, writers, actors, distributors and programmers. This festival is about FILMS and the people who MAKE them!

History

Just a couple of hours from the majestic Rocky Mountains, Edmonton is THE heart of the Canadian Prairies, the largest, most northern city in North America and home to the Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF). Six months out of the year, we are buried under snow -- making us the top movie-going audience in the country!

And each autumn, we raise the curtains on a 10-day cinematic feast that celebrates the power of film. The menu for our 20,000 festival-goers consists of more than 150 films from 40 countries, ranging from short to feature-length, dramatic to documentary, comedy to gut-wrenching and studio to independent.

The films we look for are: WORLD Cinema, DOCUMENTARIES of all kinds, COMEDY, FAMILY, EDGE of NIGHT (movies that make you squirm), films by ALBERTANS, SHORTS, films that feature SNOW and anything to do with FOOD or foodies.

Our audiences love it when they can meet the people behind, and in front of, the camera. EIFF welcomes visiting filmmakers with open arms, heartfelt hospitality, a place to sleep, some parties, and fabulous memories! Over the years, we've had the pleasure of hosting John Waters, Norman Jewison, Academy Award© winner Brenda Fricker, Deepa Mehta, Arthur Hiller, Werner Herzog, Don McKellar, Albert Maysles, Jon Cryer, Bruce McDonald, Patrick Warburton, Rita Chiarelli, Gil Kofman, Shea Whigham, Gabriel Sunday, Stephen McCole, Carl Bessai, , Academy Award© winner, Luke Matheny and countless up-and-coming filmmakers, actors, writers and producers.
