Festival Overview

Highlighting lesser-known aspects/genres of independent cinema, introducing audiences to some of the best productions of the year and establishing itself as the ideal opening of the upcoming movie season.

Awards

The GOLDEN ATHENA BEST FILM AWARD is presented to the director of the most aesthetically and technically acomplished film of the competition section and is accompanied by a cash prize of €10.000. The gold dipped statue of the godess Athena was designed by Giorgos Sepetzoglou and is kindly sponsored by La Chrysoteque ZOLOTAS. The Award is decided by a youth jury consisting of film, drama and audiovisual students, aged 18-25, specially selected from all over the European Union.

The GOLDEN ATHENA BEST MUSIC & FILM AWARD is presented to the director of the most aesthetically and technically acomplished film of the competition section and is accompanied by a cash prize of €10.000. The Awarded film will be selected by a Jury constitued by 5 International members associated with the music and film industry.

The CITY OF ATHENS BEST DIRECTOR AWARD is presented to the most accomplished directorial effort of the competition section. This award is a commemorative plaque. The Award is decided by a youth jury consisting of film, drama and audiovisual students, aged 18-25, specially selected from all over the European Union.

The BEST SCREENPLAY AWARD is presented to the writer of the film with the best script. The Award is decided by a youth jury consisting of film, drama and audiovisual students, aged 18-25, specially selected from all over the European Union.

The AUDIENCE AWARD is decided by the daily vote of the audience. If the film is acquired by a Greek distributor during or after the festival, we offer $7.500 worth of free promotion.

Open to the public

Eligibility:

The films invited to participate in the official competition section come from all over the world, with no genre limitations. Fiction, documetary, experimental cinema - no lines are drawn here. The Section intends to present a showcase of approximately 15 Competition films that marks the new trends by discovering the new talents who are not yet internationally well-known.

Athens International Film Festival will include, but will not be limited to the following films:

1. Selected Films will be placed in the appropriate programme by the Festival's Film Selection Members in coordination with the filmmakers.

2. The awarded film will be selected by the Youth Jury on the basis of quality and originality.

3. The Jury is constituted by international Film School students.

4. The awarded film will be receiving our Grand Prize -Golden Athena-.

Formats:

1. The Festival's Film Selection Department accepts screeners of a DVD format (Region Free) or VHS format (NTSC or PAL) for the selection process.

2. The screeners should be accompanied by the festival's entry form.

3. The screeners should be in their original language with English Subtitles, if the original language is not Greek or English.

4. The submission deadline is the 15th of July. The Festival is not obliged to view late entries.

5. The Festival will not consider trailers for selection purposes.

6. The Festival will not consider films produced prior to 12 months of each coming festival edition.

7. The Festival will consider films only of the following formats: a. 35mm b. 16mm c. Beta SP (Pal or NTSC) d. Digi Beta (Pal or NTSC) e. HDCAM (High Definition - Pal or NTSC)

8. The Festival will only consider films that have not been previously screened in Greece

9. The Festival will only consider films that have not been available on the Internet.

10. The Festival will not consider films submitted to previous editions of the Festival.
