Festival Overview

The goal of the Montreal World Film Festival (Montreal International Film Festival) is to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between nations, to foster the cinema of all continents by stimulating the development of quality cinema, to promote filmmakers and innovative works, to discover and encourage new talents, and to promote meetings between cinema professionals from around the world. The Montreal World Film Festival is accredited by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) and is subject to its guidelines.

Eligibility:

XIV. ELIGIBILITY TO THE DIFFERENT SECTIONS
Films selected and invited for the different sections must meet the following criteria:

1. WORLD COMPETITION
Feature films:
• be in DCP of Pro Res 422 file;
• have been completed after last edition of the Montreal World Film Festival;
• priority will be given to world premieres;
• not have been screened commercially outside the country of production;
• not have participated in any international festival or event;
• not have been presented on television or the Internet;
• Canadian films must not have been screened commercially in Canada or in any cinematographic event in
Canada or abroad, except by special permission of the Festival;
• films in a language other than French must be subtitled in French AND in English;
• films in French language must be subtitled in English;
• films in English language must be subtitled in French;
• the presence of the director of the film and the main actor (or actress) is mandatory for films in the World Competition.

Short films
In addition to the above-mentioned criteria, short films in the World Competition should not exceed 15 minutes;

2. FIRST FILMS WORLD COMPETITION
• director’s first fiction feature-length film;
• be in DCP or ProRes 422 file;
• have been completed after last edition of the Montreal World Film Festival;
• priority will be given to world premieres;
• not have been screened commercially outside the country of production;
• not have participated in any international festival or event;
• not have been presented on television or the Internet;
• Canadian films must not have been screened commercially in Canada or in any cinematographic event in
Canada or abroad, except by special permission of the Festival;
• films in a language other than French must be subtitled in French AND in English;
• films in French language must be subtitled in English;
• films in English language must be subtitled in French;
• the presence of the director is mandatory for films in the First Films World Competition.

3. WORLD GREATS (OUT-OF-COMPETITION)
Films selected and invited to participate in this non-competitive section must meet the following criteria:

• feature films in DCP or ProRes 422 file or 3D;
• have been completed after last edition of the Montreal World Film Festival;
• not have been presented on television or the Internet;
• not have been screened commercially in Canada nor in any cinematographic event in Canada. Priority will
be given to world and North American premieres.
• films in a language other than French or English must be subtitled in French OR in English.

4. FOCUS ON WORLD CINEMA (Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania)
This non-competitive section includes fiction and animation films: feature films (60 minutes or longer), medium-length films (36 to 60 minutes) and short films (35 minutes or less).

• Feature and medium-length films must be in DCP or ProRes 422 file or 3D;
• Short films must be in ProRes 422 file;
• have been completed after last edition of the Montreal World Film Festival;
• not have been presented on television in North America or the Internet;
• not have been screened commercially in Canada or in any cinematographic event in Canada. Priority will
be given to world and North American premieres.
• films in a language other than French or English must be subtitled in French OR in English;

5. DOCUMENTARIES OF THE WORLD:
This section includes feature (60 minutes or longer), medium-length (36 to 60 minutes) and
short (35 minutes or less) documentary films.

• Feature and medium-length films must be in DCP or ProRes 422 File;
• Short films must be in ProRes 422 file;
• have been completed after last edition of the Montreal World Film Festival;
• not have been presented on television in North America or the Internet;
• not have been screened commercially in Canada or in any cinematographic event in Canada. Priority will be given

• films in a language other than French or English must be subtitled in French OR in English.

Fees:

An entry fee is mandatory for all submissions sent to the Festival.

2018 Montreal World Film Festival, August 23 - Sptember 3:
160 CAD $ for feature length films (60 min or longer)
60 CAD $ for short or medium-length films (less than 60 min)

Feature film submission deadline: July 8, 2018
Short and medium-length film submishion deadline: June 8, 2018

2018 Student Film Festival, August 25-29:
The entry fee: 60 CAD $
Film submission deadline: June 8, 2018
