Festival Overview

Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival (BFMAF) is one of the UK’s leading festivals for new cinema and artists’ moving image.

Taking place in historic venues across England’s most northerly town, BFMAF 2017 will include exhibitions, film screenings and live events, as well as a young filmmakers award, school screenings and family activities. The Festival hosts the Berwick New Cinema competition, an annual prize for the very best in artists’ moving image and new filmmaking.

The festival is now open for submissions! Entries will be considered for all areas of the programme including:

• Cinema screenings
• Installations and exhibitions: moving image based and otherwise
• Live events and performance


All single screen works under 60 minutes in length will automatically be eligible for selection in the Festival’s New Cinema Competition. Lats year's winner was Cilaos by Camilo Restrepo.

Works of all types and lengths are welcome for submission. Submissions must also meet the following entry criteria:

• All submissions must have been completed after 1st January 2016.
• Any work not in the English language must be subtitled in English.
• Works must not have been screened, nor be expected to screen, at a Film Festival or Film Theatre in the North East of England or Scottish Borders prior to October 2017 - though previous gallery installation versions are permissible.
• Works must not have been theatrically released in the UK prior to October 2017.
• There is no limit to the number of works that can be submitted by any one individual or organisation, but one form must be completed per film.
• An entry fee is payable per submission.
• Rough cuts will be considered and judged accordingly.
• All submissions will be considered for the entire Festival programme and all single screen films and artists’ moving image works under 60 minutes will automatically be considered for the Berwick New Cinema Competition.

Submission fee for all entries is are £15, including feature films (61 minutes or over), short films (60 minutes or under), installations or performances.
