Southampton Film Week

Mon 11th Jun 18: Southampton Film Week – Open for Submissions 2018

Southampton Film Week’s annual film competition 'SFW: Shorts' is accepting submissions of short films of all styles, genres & techniques from filmmakers of all levels of experience. SFW: Shorts is an open competition where the only limitation is that films must be under 10 minutes in length (including credits) and must have been completed after January 2017.
SFW: Shorts has 3 submission categories (detailed below) and will shortlist the best films from each category to compete for awards and prizes including the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film.
The categories are:
Best Artists' Moving Image - for experimental and artist films which can be narrative or non-narrative. Any style of film is accepted including animation, live action, music, dance, abstract etc.
Last year's 'The Dérive' by Tanin Torabi received the first Best Artists' Moving Image award. Experimental and Artist Film has been a key strand of the Southampton Film Week programme since it's first edition was launched at John Hansard Gallery in 2008 with Jay Bolotin's Jackleg Testament Part 1: Jack and Eve.
Best Documentary - for non-fiction (factual) short films of any theme or style including animation, live action, talking heads, expository or reflective documentaries.
In 2017 Sam Smartt's 'A Name That I Admire' was given the award for Best Documentary as well as receiving the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film. Other short documentaries to have been successful at SFW: Shorts are 'Bozena and Pawel' by Kamil Iwanowicz in 2015 and the first ever SFW: Shorts winner back in 2012 Anna Cady and Em Cooper's '30% (Women & Politics in Sierra Leone)'.
Best Fiction - for narrative based fictional short films of any theme, style or genre including animation, drama, horror, comedy, thriller, romance, sci-fi etc.
Fictional short films have played a huge part throughout Southampton Film Week’s history and are celebrated at events such as the annual Short Story Cinema hosted by Solent University. In SFW: Shorts narrative based films such as Greg Tudéla's 'BREAKDOWN', 'Limit' by Javad Daraei and ‘Put Down’ by Rick Limentani, have all picked up awards in recent years.
