41st Asian American International Film Festival to Open with SEARCHING on Wednesday, July 25

NEW YORK, JUNE 12, 2018 – Presented by Asian CineVision, the 41st Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF41) will open with the Sundance smash thriller SEARCHING on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Village East Cinema. Director Aneesh Chaganty and Star John Cho are scheduled to attend the Opening Night screening with a Gala Reception to follow.

SEARCHING is the feature film debut for Aneesh Chaganty. After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective (Debra Messing) is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever. Layered into the story is not only a rich exploration of how our lives unfold both online and offline, but also an emotional portrayal of a family affected by grief and loss. The film garnered the attention of critics and general audiences alike upon its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the 2018 NEXT Audience Award.

The Asian American International Film Festival is dedicated to supporting Asian Americans in front of and behind the camera and has a history of featuring John Cho. “In 2004 we screened HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE, and last year’s festival presented COLUMBUS and the 20th anniversary of SHOPPING FOR FANGS,” says ACV Executive Director, John Woo. “We’re very proud to welcome Aneesh Chaganty to AAIFF for the first time, and to have John Cho back home with SEARCHING. In films from BETTER LUCK TOMORROW to STAR TREK, he continues to be one of the most recognizable Asian American faces on screen today, in projects reaching across genres.”

Tickets go on pre-sale for Opening Night at aaiff.org/2018 on June 11. SEARCHING will screen on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Village East Cinema (181-189 2nd Ave, New York, NY) with Director Aneesh Chaganty and Actor John Cho scheduled to attend. The 41st Asian American International Film Festival will run July 25 – August 5 with full ticket lineup for sale on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. SEARCHING will be released nationwide by Sony Pictures on August 3rd.
